I choose my subject based on the unit that I work at right now. I currently work at hospital as a CNA. I chose to interview my charge nurse as I have found that she is a phenomenal leader and works well with the floor. She has always been a great resource for me to go to not only with nursing concerns but also personal concerns in my life. She is labeled as a “clinical resource leader” which is portrayed on her badge, so she is identified as a leader throughout the hospital no matter what floor she is on. She has taught me so much about patient interaction by taking “challenging” patients on the floor for her assignment. Although these patients were “difficult” for day shift, she is able to intervene with their care and for the majority of the night shift the patients are much more content. I have also been able to witness her leadership role with staff. When working with staff of the unit, she can easily diffuse situations that arise. For example, staffing is a major issue on the unit but she is always willing to talk to whoever to make sure the right people are on the right nights. If staff needs time off, she is more than willing to pick up the slack herself or use her resources properly to get staff to cover the floor. When working with administration, such as our hospital director, the staff trusts that she will voice our concerns properly. In the past, when we have had unfair working conditions, she has brought it to the attention of administration. No later than 3-4 days after that interaction meetings were scheduled to address this.  When I think of my charge nurse I think of a leader who cares about her staff, patients, and the personal connections she makes with the two. If I am ever in a leadership position I plan on simulating the experiences she has taught me and demonstrated throughout my time there.

Michael, you did a thorough job of describing why you have selected this person you are to interview. You described the qualities you admired and provided great examples to support that. You had a brief discussion on the difference between formal and informal leadership positions. However, there is nothing here about what you want to learn from the interview…you need to give this some thought to be sure you don’t waste their time, nor yours.
